Fete de la musique - Lao style

On the 21st June France held its annual ‘Fête de la Musique’, a festival staged on the streets of every town in the country wherein anybody can add to the performance. The French cultural centre here in Vientiane organised its own event. Most of the performers were Lao, and the evening was a surprising mix of hip-hop, hard-rock / death metal, and a drag queen singing the hits of Edith Piaf and Frank Sinatra.

Dans le respect de la tradition de l’hexagone, le centre culturel français de Vientiane avait organisé une Fête de la Musique dans ses murs. Les artistes étaient principalement lao, avec un surprenant mélange de styles : hard-rock, hip-hop, cabaret…

After looking at quite a range of places to live, we settled for a nice two-bedroom bungalow near Leon’s work and about a 30-minute walk from the dead centre of Vientiane, on the bank of the Mekong. Our landlords are also our neighbours, owning the house and shop attached to our bungalow.

Après avoir visité plusieurs types d’habitation, nous avons décidé d’emménager dans cette maison, qui se situe près du travail de Leon et à environ 30 minutes à pied du centre de Vientiane. Nos propriétaires sont également nos voisins… ils possèdent la maison et le magasin accolés à « notre » maison.
