Monday 16 June 2008: Geri’s birthday / Lundi 16 juin 2008 : L’anniversaire de Geri

We celebrated Geri’s birthday with our friend Touy and his girlfriend Khan, at our house. We bought dinner from a Vietnamese food stall just down the road from our house. As can be seen in the pictures, we had spring rolls with all the trimmings. For pudding, we had a proper birthday cake, and not rice pudding, as some might have guessed… For those wondering why the present on the table is still wrapped, this is a cultural difference. In Laos, you should never open a present in front of the person giving it to you.

Nous avons fêté l’anniversaire de Geri avec Touy et sa copine Khan, chez nous. Nous avons mangé vietnamien : des nems et tout ce qui va avec, comme le montrent les photos. En dessert, nous avons eu un vrai gâteau, et pas un gâteau de riz comme certains s’imaginaient… Pour ceux qui se demandent pourquoi le cadeau sur la table est toujours emballé, c’est simplement une différence de culture : au Laos, cela ne se fait pas d’ouvrir un cadeau en présence de la personne qui l’a offert.
